Swim Across America began as a relay swim from Nantucket to Hyannis and has evolved to 17 open water swims and dozens of pool swims around the country. Read the whole story here. We are continuing the tradition of SAA on Nantucket with an annual event each August. The funds raised by the Nantucket Island Swim directly improve and expand cancer care services on-island. Swimmers of all ages are invited to take part – whether you are a veteran swimmer or you’re looking to do your first open water swim, we welcome you to help us support cancer treatment and patient care at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON).

Since 2013, over $2 million has been raised to help our families, friends, and neighbors battle cancer and receive as much of their care as possible on-island. In 2018, the event raised over $400,000 which helped provide hundreds of cancer treatments to Nantucket cancer patients and supported the hospital’s oncology program, a partnership with the Mass General Cancer Center that brings some of Boston’s finest oncologists to the island. The funds also helped provide palliative and supportive care services to patients free of charge. We are once again in awe of the generosity of our island community. Thank you to everyone who swam, volunteered and donated in the 2018 event!

Volunteer Spotlight Jill Roethke, Co-Event Director

Jill, a life-long swimmer, has been involved with Swim Across America since 2012 when she participated as a swimmer in the 25th anniversary Swim Across America event on Nantucket. She formed Team Roethke to swim in honor of her husband Steve, a melanoma survivor. Since then, Team Roethke continues to be one of SAA-Nantucket’s top fundraising teams.

Volunteer Spotlight Jim Pignato, Co-Event Director

Jim’s first experience with Swim Across America was in 1994 when, as a competitive youth swimmer on Nantucket, he took part in an Olympic Swim Clinic put on by the organization. 18 years later in 2012, Swim Across America came back to Nantucket for their 25th Anniversary. In 2013, Jim became Co-Event Director, along with Jill Roethke, and brought the now annual swim to Nantucket to benefit local cancer care.

Volunteer Spotlight Jenny Paradis, Fundraising Chair

First joining the Swim Across America “family” in 1993 as a volunteer, Jenny was thrilled to play a part in bringing SAA back to Nantucket in 2012 to support cancer care on the island. She is a former Age Group, High School, and Collegiate swimmer who made her home on Nantucket after graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1982.
