Congratulations to Nantucket Cottage Hospital maternity nurse Jessica Douglas, who was named the “Teacher of the Month” at Nantucket High School for January.

In addition to her work at The Birthplace at NCH, Jessica has been teaching the new Nursing & Allied Health class at the high school this year, introducing island students to the health care fields. The curriculm has included numerous guest speakers from Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and several field trips to the hospital’s Imaging, Laboratory and other departments.

In the photo above, Jessica, center, and certified laboratory assistant Adel Yelverton, demonstrate the basics of drawing blood as the NHS students look on.

Jessica was nominated by a fellow teacher  who wrote: “Jessica came to our school to start teaching a new course in nursing and has inspired her students to consider nursing as a career path. She has created excitement with her guest speakers, her field trips to the hospital and her overarching enthusiasm for her chosen career!  Jess has done a wonderful job with her students demonstrating a great deal of personal initiative.  She is an exciting and motivating teacher!”
