The island’s first baby of the new year — and the new decade — is Bella Fix.
Bella made her entrance into the world at 2:02 p.m. Friday at Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
The daughter of Nicko and Amy Fix, Bella has brown eyes; weighs six pounds, three ounces; and measures 18 inches.
Bella’s arrival was something of a surprise. Her mom went for a scheduled ultrasound Friday morning, and she was born four hours later.
“My wife and I were both surprised,” Nicko said, noting that Bella was due on Jan. 18 but doctors felt it was better to do a C-section. “It’s awesome. Everyone was great.”
The couple named Bella after a family restaurant established in 1955. Nicko’s grandparents, Tony and Kitty Raso, opened La Bella Pizza Garden in San Diego.
Nicko is carrying on the family culinary tradition as executive banquet chef at Great Harbor Yacht Club in Nantucket.
Amy, who was born and raised in Maui, is spending her first winter in New England. The family intends to travel back to Hawaii when Bella gets a little older.
“I’m looking forward to the day I can take her into the water,” Nicko said. “We’re happy to have had a healthy birth. It’s awesome.”
