National Nurses Week runs from May 6 through May 12 

“As President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital and a former emergency department physician, I’ve personally witnessed the talents and compassion of the NCH nursing staff.

These men and women are the backbone of this hospital, and are here 24/7 to care for our patients. Whether it’s in the operating room, on the medical/surgical floor, in the delivery room, the Emergency Department, or in our physician offices, the NCH nurses consistently go above and beyond what is expected of them to improve the lives of our patients.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital honored the recipients of the annual Partners in Excellence awards, which recognize superlative performance throughout the Partners HealthCare system, during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon in the Founders Building.

This year’s individual award winners were Annette Adams, the NCH day charge nurse, and Kim Patten, the nurse manager for the NCH medical-surgical department. The team award went to Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy Associates of NCH, including: Kelly Facteau, manager, Pedro Amaral, Janice Dougherty, Jameson Heise, Julia Heise, Elizabeth Larrabee, Jaimee Lavin, Taneisha Lewis, Karin MacLellan, Olga, Malahova, Louis Sager. Nantucket Cottage Hospital chef Wendy Turbini cooks delicious and nutritious meals for hospital staff and patients.

Wendy is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has more than 40 years of cooking and restaurant experience. On Nantucket, she served as the executive chef at the Jared Coffin House for 10 years, and also worked as a chef at her husband’s butcher shop.

“I’ve worn multiple hats during my 33 years at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, starting out as a critical care nurse then as manager in our Emergency Department and continuing in other nursing positions. In my job today as Perioperative Nurse Manager, I oversee what happens in our operating room including the preparation of patients and the surgical-related work of our doctors. (more…)
