June 7, 2023 – Nantucket Cottage Hospital is pleased to award 38 Beinecke Scholarships totaling $50,000 to island students and residents pursuing education and training in medical and healthcare fields.

Open to graduates of Nantucket High School, residents of the island, and employees of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, this scholarship fund was created by the late Nantucket businessman and civic leader Walter Beinecke, Jr. in the 1950s. Over the years, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has used the scholarship fund to assist hundreds of island students and residents further their education.

The eligibility of applicants and scholarship recipients are considered by an independent ad hoc committee consisting of leaders from Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the community at large.

Beinecke, the man who founded Sherburne Associates, and is credited with transforming Nantucket into a modern destination resort town, was a life member of Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Board of Trustees. The Beinecke Scholarship Fund’s origins date back to the early 1950s when his father, Walter Beinecke, Sr., made annual gifts through the hospital to Nantucket High School graduates to help them pay for nursing school. After his father’s death in 1958, Walter Beinecke, Jr. formally established the scholarship fund in his memory.

(April 5, 2023) Nantucket Cottage Hospital received a new, state-of-the-art MRI scanner in April 2023. The new MRI is now the most costly piece of equipment at NCH and was purchased thanks to generous donations from the Hospital Thrift Shop. “The new MRI provides much faster scan times and higher resolution images. The faster scan times are a big improvement in convenience and comfort for patients and will make more appointments available. The higher image resolution means that many diagnostic procedures that have previously required a costly trip off-island can now be done here on Nantucket.” – Dr. Chinyere “C” Rumph, NCH Director of Imaging. NCH is pleased to bring back our ACKs of LOVE initiative from February 14 through February 28, 2023 celebrating NCH staff with discounts and giveaways at local businesses. Thanks to the generosity of the NCH Board of Trustees, staff can take advantage of the following perks by showing a hospital-issued ID.

December 5, 2022 – Crews began site work today to prepare for the construction of three new workforce houses for NCH. The houses are being built on a newly created lot at 60 Meadowview Drive.

The lot was created from an existing lot that the hospital received in an estate gift from island native James R. Dennis. Mr. Dennis gifted the original property to NCH as a Life Estate in 2002. The hospital in turn rented the existing three-unit property from Mr. Dennis from 2002 until his passing in 2018, providing him income from the property during his lifetime.

The new homes, which include a total of 8 bedrooms and 8 baths, are being manufactured off-island by Dreamline Modular Homes of Nantucket and they are expected to be installed and complete by the late spring of 2023. The three new homes are in addition to two newly constructed 6 bedroom duplexes the hospital acquired in March of this year, totaling an additional 20 bedrooms and baths in 7 units added to the hospital’s owned housing inventory in 2022 and 2023.
