Hospital Open House Featured in The Cape Cod Times

NANTUCKET — Nantucket is on the verge a new era of health care, and in movie parlance, its new hospital is ready for a close-up.

An estimated 500 people got a sneak peek at the gleaming new Nantucket Cottage Hospital on Saturday during two open house events — one for employees and their families and one for the general public — in advance of an official opening next month. The $89 million, 106,000-square-foot facility is adjacent to the existing and soon-to-be demolished hospital that was built in 1957 when the island had roughly one-third of its current year-round population.

“I think of it as time travel from 1957 to the 21st century,” said Dr. Margot Hartmann, president and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

NANTUCKET — Pauline Skok was struck by the beauty of this island the first time she stepped off the ferry, on a work assignment in 2016. So after years of working as a traveling nurse, she decided to take a job at Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

Skok knew that this summer playground of the upper crust, with its historic charm and picture-perfect beaches, had a shortage of affordable housing. But she was not prepared for the struggle she would face next. The veteran nurse wanted a stable, year-long lease — but instead drifted through eight residences over two and a half years. Every time she moved, she wondered: “How much more can I do?” Skok’s experience is so common that it has a name — “the Nantucket Shuffle” — and the local hospital, a major employer on the island, is taking an unusual step to address it.

NCH Awards $1.1 million in Community Health Initiative Grants

Nantucket Cottage Hospital announced Friday that it has awarded $1.1 million in grant funding to 14 non-profit agencies and organizations through its Community Health Initiative, which seeks to address the island’s most pressing health issues through collaborative, innovative, and sustainable programs.

The Community Health Initiative grant funds are available through the private donations to Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s capital campaign to build the island’s new hospital. As a state-approved capital project, the hospital is required to invest 5 percent of the total project cost in improving community health outside the walls of the hospital.

This year’s awards are the second in a series of grant cycles that will ultimately invest more than $4 million to improve the health and wellbeing of the island. The hospital sought proposals in four areas: behavioral health; women’s and children’s health; access to healthcare; and access to housing. (more…)
