Psychiatry & Mental Health

Your mental health is as important
as physical health

Overview

Overview

Nantucket Cottage Hospital is committed to supporting the behavioral health needs of the island community. Psychiatric nurse practitioner Hannah Severns has an extensive background in the assessment and treatment of mental health issues and substance use disorders, and is embedded in the primary care physician offices to assess, diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of behavioral health issues. In collaboration with the island’s primary care physicians and therapists, Severns sees patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics.  Please contact your physician for a referral to schedule an appointment with Hannah Severns.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital also represents the acute safety net for patients who require psychiatric evaluation and stabilization in our Emergency Department, as well as continued observation and treatment. Evaluations for every patient who presents to our Emergency Department with behavioral health or substance abuse issues are provided by either our Social Services Department’s licensed social workers or the dedicated Emergency Response staff from Fellowship Health Resources seven days a week. Evaluation continues daily until a safe disposition is determined.

If a patient requires further hospitalization in a licensed mental health or substance abuse facility, our social workers connect with such facilities on the mainland and coordinate bed placements, insurance approvals and transportation arrangements.
