Our Affiliation with
Massachusetts General Hospital
& Partners HealthCare
Nantucket Cottage Hospital is a member of Partners HealthCare and an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital. The mission of Nantucket Cottage Hospital has always been to provide the highest qualtiy health care services to our community on Nantucket, and to connect our patients with those services which are not available on the island. Our affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital is an integral part of this goal.
The most significant benefit of the affiliation is for patients with complex medical needs who require tertiary care or specialty services unavailable on the island. These patients now have a direct link to caregivers and services at the MGH, offering better coordination of care and services through such means as a shared electronic medical record and an expanded pool of consulting sub-specialists.
MGH physicians have long consulted at NCH, seeing patients on a regular basis on the island. Additionally, NCH has experienced long-standing clinical collaborations with the MGH in such specialties as cardiology, neurology, dermatology and emergency services. Additionally, NCH is connected to the MGH through telemedicine links.
About Massachusetts General Hospital
Founded in 1811, the MGH is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest in New England. The 900-bed medical center offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery. Each year the MGH admits more than 46,000 inpatients and handles nearly 1.5 million outpatient visits at its main campus and health centers. Its Emergency Department records nearly 80,000 visits annually. The surgical staff performs more than 35,000 operations and the MGH Vincent Obstetrics Service delivers more than 3,500 babies each year. The MGH conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the country, with an annual research budget of approximately $500 million. It is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where nearly all MGH staff physicians serve on the faculty. The MGH is consistently ranked among the nation’s top few hospitals by US News and World Report .
About Partners HealthCare
Partners HealthCare was founded in 1994 by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Partners is an integrated health care system that offers patients a continuum of coordinated high-quality care. The system includes the two founding academic medical centers, community hospitals, specialty facilities, community health centers, primary care and specialty physicians and other health-related entities. Partners HealthCare is a nonprofit organization.
Our affiliation with Mass General and Partners has led to many enhancements in our programs and services in the past several years. A few examples include:
- Increased Visiting Specialty Physicians: Nantucket Cottage Hospital now has over 30 specialty physicians who regularly visit the island practicing over 25 sub-specialties, including neurology, dermatology, podiatry, endocrinology and pediatrics. The community benefited from these services, as indicated by a nearly 450 percent increase in the number of specialty clinic visits over the past five years.
- Increased Telemedicine Interface with MGH: Nantucket Cottage Hospital was an early adopter of teledermatology. It has become the backbone of our dermatology services and continues to grow. The hospital has also added telestroke services to further enhance access to the clinical expertise of our affiliate Massachusetts General Hospital.
- Created MGH-supported Programs such as Oncology/Hematology Service: In April 2013, we expanded our oncology services in collaboration with the Mass General Cancer Center, bringing MGH oncologists to the island for regular visits with Nantucket patients. The Mass General Hematology/Oncology Service at Nantucket provides local cancer patients with access to one of the finest cancer treatment programs in the country without having to leave the island, and reduces the number of trips they must make off-island for care. Since the Spring of 2013, the MGH oncologists and nurse practitioners who travel to Nantucket from Boston provided over 450 patient visits on the island. The number of chemotherapy treatments provided on-island has increased more than 65 percent since the beginning of the program.
- Began Conversion to Electronic Medical Records: We launched a new Patient Portal online health management tool to allow patients to view a summary of their hospital visit. A multi-year plan to convert to electronic medical records began in 2012.
